The internationally active artist group Škart aims to provoke, asking us to take responsibility for ourselves and for others. At the invitation of PLATFORM, Škart are coming to Munich and will create an expansive environment that takes over the exhibition space at PLATFORM. The ‘walk-a-plants’, poetic slogans, banners and wheelbarrow armchairs that they combine in their installation will provide the spatial and thematic framework for the PLATFORM program until the end of June 2016. The installation revolves around the question of what impulse design can bring to the process of societal change.

Škart made its name on the international stage through the design of the Serbian pavilion at the 2010 Architecture Biennale in Venice. Since 1990 Dragan Protić and Djordje Balmazović have worked as Škart (English. ‘scrap’, ‘rejects’; German: ‘Ausschuss’, ‘Rest’) in several collectives and projects at the interface of design, journalism, poetry, music and social engagement. Their complex/multilayered artistic practice engages with the political and social dimensions of society.

Škart’s work has been presented worldwide in both group and solo-exhibitions, including at the OFF Biennale Venice; Manifesta Ljubljana; the NGBK – Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst, Berlin; Flipside, New York and the Kunsthalle Fridericianum. The collective has also been the recipient of a number of international prizes and awards.

Which role can virtual reality play for the arts? How to visualize decay? How an application can help artists organize their artworks and exhibitions?  How do we percieve design products? How to innovate children toys? How do we communicate with new technologies through interface design?

Questions like these will be tackled by Munich designers and artists Niko Abramidis &NE, Nana Dix, Mike Prinz, Friederike Daumiller, Federico Lameri and Wolfgang Huther in short presentations of their current projects.

How does the migration affect cultural production? What kind of images and stories does it use? Who speaks for whom? What can culture do? How can people with and without migration experience work together? What is important for the empowerment? How can gained knowledge be documented and employed practically?

The evening „What comes after the Welcome?“ is devoted to the engagement of many cultural actors and the potential of their actions given the challenges associated to migration, displacement and arrival to another country.

Experts, artists, authors, activists and people who are either biographically or professionally connected to experience of escape/migration present their creative ideas, participatory projects and art practices.

In a mutual exchange the participants will reflect and discuss how to develop new structures and strategies of action in Munich.

The following projects are taking part: Arriving in Munich, which uses mapping, photo and video storytelling to document and tell public stories about arrival in Munich, Messages of Refugees, a refugee radio project by ZÜNDFUNK, the socially and collaboratively organized film festival Kino Asyl,  the housing project Bellevue di Monaco and cultural project ideas and art works such as Realitätsflüchtlinge by Anna McCarthy. Further guests are: dramaturge and performer Rania Mleihi, who will speak about the newly founded OPEN BORDER ENSEMBLE of Münchner Kammerspiele and Miro Craemer, who will present his project TOGETTHERE, which has been running since March and organized in cooperation with Pinakothek der Moderne, in which fashion is produced in cooperation with refugees.
